Remark :
Originally planned to build 12 but reduced to 9. Following completion of this class (KSS-I), a Korean own designed 3,000 tons (SSX project) capable of launching the tactical cruise missiles developed by ROK had been planned but postponed due to the lack of missile developing technologies.

Instead of this, 6 larger improved versions which is Type 212 1,500 tons (KSS-II project) with AIP was planned to start the project with Daewoo in 1997 but it was also postponed by Hyundai's claim and foreign currency shortage.

The project restarted in 1998 and the Defense Ministry decided to introduce free competition into the "KSS-II project" for manufacturing of six submarines worth 1.8 trillion won on Dec. 22.

In May 20,1999, South Korea has decided to purchase three Russian-made submarines worth about 1.2 trillion won ($1 billion) to help Moscow pay overdue debts it owes to Seoul but finally rejected this trial.

The ministry selected 214-class subs of Germany's HDW as its model for the envisioned submarine project in Nov. 2 2000. The project to build three 1,800-ton submarines will cost 950 billion won from 2000 to 2009.
